Give to Gain. The real value of human
On International Women’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on words that rarely appears on a company dashboard: kindness, generosity and care.
Yet these qualities are some of the most powerful forces in any organisation or community.
Women often carry a large share of this invisible work: supporting colleagues, mentoring quietly, smoothing tensions, checking in when someone is struggling, holding teams together when things get difficult.
It rarely appears in performance metrics.
It rarely appears in financial models.
But it is part of the human operating system that creates real value.
At yuzu+co we talk a lot about the “value of human” in business.
In most companies, 70–80% of enterprise value sits in people. Their ideas, relationships, judgement, creativity, resilience and collaboration.
But the systems we build to support that value are often surprisingly thin.
We measure financial performance in extraordinary detail. We optimise processes endlessly.
Yet the human system, the one that actually produces that value, often runs on goodwill, emotional labour and people quietly giving more than they take.
And women are often at the centre of that.
So this International Women’s Day, there are two things worth remembering.
First: the generosity, care and emotional intelligence that so many women bring into workplaces is not “soft”. It is value creation.
Second: giving endlessly to others without replenishing yourself isn’t sustainable.
Give to Gain applies to ourselves too.
Looking after your health, protecting your energy, strengthening your body and mind aren’t indulgences.
They are the foundation that allows us to continue supporting the people, teams and communities that depend on us.
When women are strong, supported and valued, everyone gains.
It’s why I invest time in strengthening my own body and energy, training with a brilliant group of women (and a wonderfully motivational trainer) who encourage each other to keep getting stronger. Looking after ourselves isn’t selfish. It’s part of how we continue supporting others.
Happy International Women’s Day.
